Komatsu unveiled the new dynamic diversified 930E mining truck at this week's MineExpo in Las Vegas. The concept truck has been tested at Komatsu's test site in Arizona, and the first pre-production model will travel to Sweden to work at the AITIK mine in Boliden, one of Europe 's largest open-pit copper mines. The standard 930E electric truck has a load carrying capacity of 640,000 pounds and carries a 2,700 horsepower diesel engine. Boliden said it would be the first mine in the world to use the mine truck and that it"Has the option of being converted to battery-powered". With Komatsu 's modular powertrain diversification platform, truck owners can switch their trucks from diesel to alternative energy as needed. "Komatsu's platform allows mining companies to start with conventional diesel engines and to transition to cleaner energy as needed, including using cable-assisted technology to reduce dynamic charging of diesel or future battery trucks, thereby reducing fuel consumption and emissions," the company said, "Whether it is battery technology, hydrogen fuel cell technology, or a combination of multiple energy systems, the powertrain 930E provides the necessary infrastructure and adaptability to meet Changing Sustainable Development Goals."

Komatsu has been working with companies to advance its alternative energy strategy. In August 2021, Komatsu announced the powertrain diversity truck concept and reached an agreement with Cummins that Cummins had launched its own fuel diversity engine platform, it can use diesel, natural gas, propane, biofuels or hydrogen. At the 2023, Komatsu announced a partnership with General Motors to develop the 930E hydrogen fuel cell power module. Komatsu is also working with ABB to develop electrification infrastructure. Total reliance on battery power is still seen as an inefficient way to reduce emissions for such a large device, although progress is being made. Hydrogen fuel cell technology, by contrast, is seen as a more viable solution. "Hydrogen fuel cells are lightweight and fast to fuel, making them ideal for electrification of conventional diesel engines," GM said, "Hydrogen provides an effective way to store a large amount of energy in a car without compromising its load carrying capacity," said Komatsu, who plans to halve carbon emissions from product use and equipment production by 2030 from 2010 levels, and achieve"Carbon neutrality" by 2050 as part of the strategy. Powerdiversity 930E is also seen as a way to help mining companies transition to zero emissions and"Make Room" for future growth.
